Feed the (Scary) Pig

Today I heard about a website called feedthepig.org, an educational effort to teach the average American how to save money.  Sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and The Advertising Council, the goal of the campaign is to “encourage and help Americans aged 25 to 34 to take control of their personal finances.”

One problem.  The spokespig looks like something out of a horror film.  When I first saw him I instantly wondered who had axed the piggy in the head.  His pasty complexion furthers the impression of a zombie-undead doll creation ala Chuckie.  The fact that he wears a pink suit with all the fanatic neatness of Norman Bates and has creepy, human eyes just accentuates the eerieness of this mascot.

Surely whoever created this character designed it to raise the hair on the back of your neck.  Was the intention to frighten us away from saving money… or maybe it is meant as a subliminal threat: Save your pennies or the piggy will find you.  The site is called “feedthepig” and I can’t help but wonder what he likes to eat.

I haven’t had much time to peruse the site but so far I’m interested to see what it contains.  It looks like it could be a valuable tool to encourage penny pinching – kind of like Facebook for tightwads.  I’ll just need to find out how to put a bag over the scary, staring pig first.

What do you think of him… scary, cute or inspirational?
