I wish I could say I thought of the idea to spoof someone notable reading my books but I have to give credit to Cheryl Kaye Tardif who got the idea from Christopher Rice. I posted their famous fan pics at the bottom of this post.
As far as viral marketing goes, these are genius. They are free, take a little bit of work with Photoshop, Gimp or what have you and definitely get noticed. I’d suggest picking a celebrity/publicc figure that emulates your book. End of Mae is dark and unexpected with a sense of humor. Accordingly, I chose Johnny Depp to ‘represent’ my book.
Also, remember that you are trying for the unexpected. Naked skin, crazy hair and odd situations attract the eye, and get your message noticed. Finally, have fun and remember it’s a joke. Trying to make people think Johnny Depp really reads my work and getting found out as a fraud later is definitely not the image I want to play. Attract attention, but be truthful.
That’s about it. A simple idea with a lot of milege. Kudos to Christopher Rice and Cheryl Kaye Tardiff! Now, go have fun celebrity shopping and creating your own famous fans ;D
