Apologies for Pirantulas!

Yesterday someone mentioned an anthology seeking retro style horror stories, reprints okay. Perfect, I thought. My old story Pirantulas! would fit the theme. I hunted it down in my files and did a quick read to make sure it was okay. It wasn’t, and here’s where the apology comes in.

That story was horrible. The characters don’t act logically, their dialogue is non-essential and the descriptions were borderline cliché. I am so sorry to anyone who read that story years ago.

My deepest condolences. I wish I could make restitution to all of you. To think we made a tiny film from Pirantulas!—the story was truly terrible. I rewrote the whole thing last night.

The situation makes me think… what am I writing now that will make future me cringe? Probably everything, and therein lies the hope. However terrible we are today, we improve. We learn to be better writers. We get better until we stop breathing.

Perhaps I’ll pull out some of my early work and throw it on the slab for reworks. I realize now these stories weren’t ignored because I was ‘undiscovered.’ They are actually just terrible. Again, my sincerest apologies to all my early readers with gratitude that you continued to read me, in spite of it all. Perhaps I’ll have my own, personal book burning… I’ll start with Pirantulas!

Here’s Pirantulas! on YouTube… for once the movie is better than the book!
