Happy Halloween!

On the Thirteenth day of Halloween my true love gave to me… a reading of “Happy Neewollah!” Written just for the Horror Writer Association’s Poetry Gallery for the holiday. It was published in the October 2020 newsletter, only available to members.

Ryan Aussie Smith

Why did I write it? This year has been such a special one. It’s my first real life dystopian collapse. I’ve had more moments of disbelief in the last 10 months than I have in my life time. I remember as a child praying that I would live to see the apocalypse. It sounded super interesting in Revelations and Nostradamus. Somewhere around June I started wondering if that had been a wise wish.

Wise wishes or not, I didn’t want to rehash a typical Halloween poem, because it certainly hasn’t been a typical year. After what we’ve been through all year the holiday has really lost a lot of it’s fright appeal. Hopefully this poem reflects how I feel about this Halloween. Nothing makes sense. It’s a Wonderland of mixed signals. Nothing has logic.

This is “Happy Neewollah,” written by me and performed by Ryan Aussie Smith, and it concludes our first ever Thirteen Days of Halloween celebration. Ryan Aussie Smith will be back in December to help revive the lost tradition of the Christmas ghost story.
