Author opportunities

The Writer SuicideSquad58p16I’ve recently joined a fantastic group of authors started by my new friend Sarah Butland. The purpose of the group is to share ideas, recognizing that we each see this whole puzzle of publishing differently.  Together we might get a whole picture.

It reminds me of the old story about the blind men and the elephant.  Each described the whole elephant as being just like the one small part they could actually feel.  That is us as authors.  I gravitate towards Facebook but ignore Twitter.  I blog religiously but don’t do many public signings.  Joining this group and discussing what works for each of us has been invigorating.   I feel like I’m seeing more of ‘the elephant’ than I was ever able to before.

Two of my most exciting new finds has been Page 99 Test and the Iron Writer’s Challenge.

From the Page 99 Test website:

For decades, readers have used the Page 99 Test to judge the writing of a book before buying it. That’s the idea here… but with a twist.

Here, published and unpublished writers share their page 99s with readers like you. And you get to rate their writing (without knowing if it’s published or who the author is). It’s fast. Fun. Addictive.  Here’s my own test page ready to be read and reviewed!

The other new author thing I found so exciting is The Iron Writer Challenge, introduced to me by Michael D. Pitman.  The idea is simple:

The Iron Writer Challenge is a flash fiction or poetry writing contest open to anyone. You do not have to be a ‘writer’ to participate. Currently there are no prizes for the weekly challenges. However, every three months, an Iron Writer Tournament takes place. The four quarterly winners will compete for the annual championship. The current prize is a free eBook Cover from Book Cover Art.

You KNOW I signed up as fast as I could – that sounds like too much fun!  I’m scheduled for the challenge running from September 12-15.  Check my schedule if you forget the dates!

Here’s two good ways for writers to play.  Have you found any interesting tools or games? Link them and leave them in the comments section!
