Sneak Peek at My Nano Novel

Mr. Smith is talking to his family on Skype tonight and I’m being way too interested in the conversation.  I’ve been staring at the last sentence I wrote about two hours ago and piping in to the convo every few minutes.

Instead of struggling further I thought I’d post a sneak peek of the beginning.  This is my unedited, first draft.  When Amy gets ahold of it, she will polish it until it gleams.

From My NANOWRIMO Work In Progress:

I hesitated before I pulled the door completely shut.  Once it shut, my life would change forever.  Everything I was in the past would be gone… if I survived.  The future was dim but exciting; like a half remembered dream I was yet to have.  My bag was packed, my mind was made up.  All I had left to do was close the door.

Quietly I pulled it to, carefully releasing the latch so it made no noise.  My parents wouldn’t hear it from their bedroom upstairs, but I was taking no chances.  I wondered if I’d ever see them again, and I wondered why I felt no emotion.  My heart was stone in my chest, thumping methodically as if oblivious to the amazing happenings going on outside.  I was leaving my home, marching out into the unknown world at sixteen.  I turned my house key in the lock, picked up my old leather suitcase and turned to face my new world.  “And now my adventure starts.” I whispered to myself, and stepped off the porch.

  1. I’m with John that’s exactly what went through my mind. The next line is:
‘Silently closing the bedroom door, leaving the note that she hoped would say more …’

It’s ‘She’s leaving home’ by the Beatles, and it’s perfect for your intro 🙂

  2. Really like the opening… takes us right into her head and now I want to know more… why is she running away from home. She doesn’t seem scared or regretful for leaving her parents… has me curious.
