I got an invite to join a new online virtual venue for writers called Curious Fiction. When I clicked over to check it out, I saw Ashley Dioses already over there. If Ashley is on there, it must be a pretty good site. I accepted.
Exploring the site, I think I’ll be using it to get feedback from beta readers on new chapters of the Bitter Suite sequel, Suite & Sour as well as parking some of my past work. I loved being on Radish, but that app seems geared toward romance, of which I have none (unless you count “Poinsettia Creams,” the second chapter of Bitter Suites). Curious Fiction seems to have a lot of dark and speculative work up already, so it may be just the place for me.
Anyone else have any experience with Curious Fictions? To me, it seems like a cross between Gather and Patreon. Share your thoughts!
I got an invite too –went to the site and there’s this money/donation thing involved. It’s just me, I guess –but I’ve (as a Dem) been barraged daily (many times) to donate small amounts and then on FB –Indigogo sites for authors or editor’s anthologies abound. Or someone I barely know of is in hospital and has insufficient insurance, donate, donate & more donate.
I don’t want folks to donate to me as fans of my work. So I passed on it. But to each, their own?
I agree with you on the annoyance of everyone asking for small donations lately. If I gave a dollar every time I was asked, my checkbook would be a mess—and empty!
Since you can offer work for free reading, I’m thinking it might be a nice venue for connecting with readers, especially since the site seems to favor the darker works. Ages ago I used to write for Gather, a similar site without the donation aspect, and it was a great way to get my work out there, get feedback and connect with other writers. I’m hoping this can be the same thing.
Angela, it does have a positive side –guess it’s what you do and how you deal with it. Do post more (or email me) once you try it out for awhile and let me/readers know! :)
I will. I signed on with Radish awhile back for the same reasons but it didn’t achieve what I wanted. The main readership there seems devoted to romance and soft porn. Since I write neither, I stopped posting there.
